Virtual Support in COVID-19 Crisis

This morning I woke up with a hoarse voice and elevated anxiety. That stress is less about the potential of having coronavirus (this is pretty normal for me to feel a little tickle or get a runny nose after flying) and more about my concerns that our communities of birth and postpartum doulas, photographers, and therapists are having a tough time supporting clients when they need it the most.

Yesterday I had an awesome session with Kim Grevler, which helped me see I was giving too much weight to the automatic negative thoughts in my mind and contributing to my own stress. So instead, I am refocusing those thoughts into creative opportunities. This time is hard for EVERYONE, right? Why not offer a hand and help?

I’ve been a video creative over a decade and know there’s a ton of power in virtual connection. TED talks have inspired billions of views around the world and I was very lucky to be a part of that change. I’ve seen first hand how video can shape our communities. Let’s use it in a time of crisis to connect with others. I imagine many are overwhelmed by the technology available so here’s a short list of available options and considerations. You can do it!

Think about accessibility and the diversity of your communities.

Do they have access to wifi? Do they have a smart phone? Do they have quiet rooms for conversation? Most do, but some may not. If solid wifi is a problem, consider a phone call or Facetime to reduce frustrations.

Practical Tips

Lighting - Set up your computer or phone in an area of your home with adequate lighting.

Noise - Is there a way to limit background noises so you can be heard clearly and minimize frustrations?

Ease of connection - Set up a direct link in Zoom or Google Meet to share with clients via email or text.

Each of these options will help you connect virtually with your clients for free during this tough time. While we’re being asked to limit contact with others, it’s even more important to connect with those who are vulnerable. Birth and postpartum clients will undoubtedly have concerns. This morning Mt Sinai East started a one (no longer two) visitor policy for the entire duration of a birthing person’s stay. The remaining hospitals in NYC are likely to follow suit quickly.

This is our time to step up, try to connect and share resources and tips to manage the stresses of coronavirus. Even if you can’t meet with them in person, they still might need help with medications or other supplies. Please, check in. Most of all, empathize. We’re all struggling in our own ways.

Sending love to you all. I’m happy to chat with anyone who needs 1:1 help connecting with clients via video or otherwise.
